Ashley Adamson,\u00a02021 Rhode Island State Teacher of the Year and Grade 3\u00a0Teacher at\u00a0Hathaway Elementary School in RI, shares more about her role and the impact the Choose Love Movement and Scarlett has had on her life.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. What does it mean to you to be the RI State teacher of the year? What do you do in your role?\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    This role is both an honor and a privilege. I have the privilege to represent all of the outstanding educators we have across the state of RI.\u00a0 I get to collaborate and learn from other teachers, not just in RI, but across the United States.\u00a0 I have a voice and am part of new initiatives and positive changes in education.<\/p>\n

    One part of my role consists of my platform which is social-emotional learning or SEL.\u00a0 I have the chance to advocate for SEL, present on it, and bring SEL awareness to others across the state.\u00a0 In addition to promoting my platform, I work with The RI Department of Education to develop educator recognition initiatives and support programs throughout the state.<\/p>\n

    2. Why do you\u00a0like being an educator?\u00a0<\/p>\n

    I believe that the work of an educator is one of the most noble jobs you can have. As a teacher, I have the ability to change a child\u2019s life and inspire their future endeavors.\u00a0 I can think of no greater honor than the trust put in me to create a safe environment for students to learn and grow as individuals.\u00a0 How lucky am I that I get the opportunity to interact with children on a daily basis and help them be the best versions of themselves, not just academically but emotionally.\u00a0 I became a teacher because of my inspirational first grade teacher, Donna Carreiro.\u00a0 She is my \u201cwhy,\u201d my inspiration to go into education.\u00a0 But those sweet faces I have the honor of teaching?\u00a0 They are why I continue to pour my heart into my job.\u00a0 They inspire me every day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

    1. How do you incorporate Choose Love in the classroom?\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Social-emotional learning is something I incorporate into my classroom on a daily basis. It is a topic I am very passionate about.\u00a0 After hearing Scarlett speak a little while back, I immediately began implementing Choose Love in my classroom.\u00a0 I am currently going through the \u201cBrave New World\u201d unit with my students.\u00a0 After introducing my class to certain parts of the unit (i.e. star breathing, tapping, meditation chimes, etc.), I continue to go back to it and encourage them to use these tools (as we call them in our classroom) on their own.\u00a0 One of the most powerful things I have found is asking students to share a time that they used one of the tools and how it helped them.\u00a0 As Scarlett says, SEL is not something that is taught in isolation and then you \u201cmove on\u201d to the next subject.\u00a0 It needs to be woven into your day and incorporated as much as possible.\u00a0 I am amazed at how well my students have responded to Choose Love.\u00a0 From day one, they were invested and open to the tools, topics, and conversations. \u00a0I have found the lesson that introduces the term \u201canxiety\u201d to be a particularly powerful one.\u00a0 It was eye opening to see how many students could explain what it meant to be anxious and describe how they have felt.\u00a0 This lesson provided them with a word for those emotions and the message that it was normal to feel this way because everyone feels it in one way or another.\u00a0<\/p>\n

      1. How do you practice the Choose Love formula in your daily\u00a0life?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        From the very first time I heard Scarlett speak, I immediately began working hard on changing my mindset of \u201cI have to\u201d to \u201cI get to.\u201d My husband did the same.\u00a0 That alone has been life changing.\u00a0 I\u2019m not perfect, of course.\u00a0 Sometimes I have to stop and do some self-talk to change what I am thinking or am about to say.\u00a0 But, you know what?\u00a0 I am doing it and it feels good!\u00a0 I am incredibly blessed to have things that I \u201cget to do\u201d and I try to remind myself of this every day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

        I also have a four-year-old son with whom I find myself practicing the choose love formula on a daily basis.\u00a0 We engage in conversations about how he is feeling and why.\u00a0 He knows that all different types of feelings are ok.\u00a0 My son can become frustrated when something doesn\u2019t come easy to him.\u00a0 We have used brave breaths and star breathing in our house to help reset during these times.\u00a0<\/p>\n

        1. Anything\u00a0else you want to share?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Scarlett is nothing short of amazing. To have the ability to turn a tragedy into this incredibly powerful message of choosing love is just remarkable.\u00a0 I believe as many people as possible need to hear Scarlett\u2019s message, because she is changing people\u2019s lives for the better.\u00a0 I am so fortunate I had the ability to be impacted by Scarlett and for that I am eternally grateful.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
