Social and Emotional Learning means learning how to have healthy relationships, how to make deep and meaningful connections, skills and tools for resilience and learning how to manage our emotions.<\/p>\n<p>We are NOT born with these skills, and they are essential to a happy and healthy life.<\/p>\n<p>SEL teaches personal responsibility, giving children an awareness of who they are and an understanding of and compassion for others.\u00a0 Social and emotional learning proactively reduces and prevents suffering, before it even starts.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What Is Social Emotional Learning (SEL?) | Choose Love Introduction\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/c22KiY5orRk?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) defines social and emotional learning (SEL) as \u201cthe process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.casel.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-kmt=\"1\">casel.org<\/a>).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over 30 years of research substantiates the benefits of social and emotional learning (SEL), (CASEL: What is SEL, 2016).<\/p>\n<p>SEL is based in the idea that rich and meaningful learning occurs when people are engaged in positive and supporting relationships. It llays the groundwork for academic learning and responsible citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>Social and emotional learning has been proven to increase grades, attendance, and focus, while reducing aggression, anxiety, substance abuse, and other issues (CASEL: What is SEL, 2016).<\/p>\n<p>SEL plays a critical role in improving children\u2019s academic performance and lifelong learning (Zins, Bloodworth, Weissberg &amp; Walberg, 2004).<\/p>\n<p>Children who are aware of their emotions and have good planning skills by the time they enter school are also at lower risk for problems with aggression and anxiety disorders (Greenberg, Kusch, &amp; Mihalic, 1998).<\/p>\n<p>Students aren\u2019t the only ones who benefit from SEL. Schools are challenged by teacher attrition and unsafe learning environments (CASEL: What is SEL, 2016). When educators teach SEL, they help students create safe, loving, and healthy problem-solving communities that enhance teachers\u2019 ability to teach as well as students\u2019 ability to learn (CASEL: Outcomes Associated with Five Competencies, 2016).<\/p>\n<p>According to CASEL, the 5 core competencies to be taught in an SEL curriculum are defined as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Self-Awareness<\/strong> is the\u00a0ability to accurately recognize one&#8217;s own emotions and thoughts and how these influence behavior.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Self-Management<\/strong> is the\u00a0ability to successfully regulate one&#8217;s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social Awareness<\/strong>\u00a0if the\u00a0ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Relationship Skills<\/strong>\u00a0require the ability\u00a0to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Responsible Decision-Making<\/strong>\u00a0requires the ability to\u00a0make constructive choices about personal behavior and social interactions based on ethical standards, safety concerns, and social norms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Choose Love has added to these 5 core competencies in our Choose Love For Schools<b>\u2122<\/b> curriculum, creating what we call a Next Generation model for SEL that also includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Character Education<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Positive Psychology<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Neuroscience<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mindfulness<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Growth Mindset<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Post-Traumatic Growth<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chooselovemovement.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Choose-Love-SEL-Wheel-Updated-5-27-21-transparent.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-219435 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/chooselovemovement.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Choose-Love-SEL-Wheel-Updated-5-27-21-transparent-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"394\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/server.peraltadev.com\/chooselove\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Choose-Love-SEL-Wheel-Updated-5-27-21-transparent-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/server.peraltadev.com\/chooselove\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Choose-Love-SEL-Wheel-Updated-5-27-21-transparent-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/server.peraltadev.com\/chooselove\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Choose-Love-SEL-Wheel-Updated-5-27-21-transparent-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/server.peraltadev.com\/chooselove\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Choose-Love-SEL-Wheel-Updated-5-27-21-transparent-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/server.peraltadev.com\/chooselove\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Choose-Love-SEL-Wheel-Updated-5-27-21-transparent-980x980.png 980w, https:\/\/server.peraltadev.com\/chooselove\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Choose-Love-SEL-Wheel-Updated-5-27-21-transparent-480x480.png 480w, https:\/\/server.peraltadev.com\/chooselove\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Choose-Love-SEL-Wheel-Updated-5-27-21-transparent.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Choose Love Movement SEL Ripple Model demonstrates how next generation SEL does not take place in a vacuum, but rather extends outward from the classroom, to school-wide practices and policies, and even further to family, community and business partnerships.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?
