\u2018Choose Love\u2019 to Stop Violence, Sandy Hook Mom Says On Eve of Shooting’s 7th Anniversary<\/a><\/h3>\n

\"\"Nurturing. Healing. Love.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as I saw that message, I knew that if our shooter had been able to give and receive nurturing, healing love, the tragedy would never have happened,\u201d [Scarlett] says.<\/p>\n

Right there and then, the seeds were planted for the idea for what would become the\u00a0Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement.<\/a><\/p>\n

Lewis founded the program to prevent other families from having to endure the hell that she and other victims\u2019 families have lived through since the day she lost the boy she called her \u201ccuddle bunny.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything else we\u2019ve tried to prevent gun violence hasn\u2019t worked,\u201d says Lewis, who penned a book on her son\u2019s message,\u00a0Nurturing, Healing Love: A Mother\u2019s Journey to Hope and Forgiveness<\/em>,<\/a>\u00a0with Natasha Stoynoff.<\/p>\n

\u201cLots of people want to have safe schools,\u201d she says. \u201cBut unfortunately, violence is increasing, trauma is increasing, bullying is increasing, substance abuse is increasing and suicide rates are increasing.\u201d<\/p>\n

So are mass shootings.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only thing that I know that addresses the cause of all of those issues \u2014 and therefore is a solution \u2013 is social and emotional<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

learning. That is proactive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we\u2019re realizing now is that the most important part of school safety is the school culture \u2014 cultivating a safe, kind, connected, loving, compassionate school culture to prevent a grievance from ever happening,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

If there is a grievance, the Choose Love program gives students and educators the skills and tools to manage it before it escalates into an attack, she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is actually the number-one way to have a safe school,\u201d she says.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
