Leadership and legacy also took center stage as Director of Athletics
Anthony D. Henderson Sr. ‘00, a proud Hampton alumnus, became the first
athletics director featured on “Coaches Corner” by the Greater Hampton
Roads Better Business Bureau for his excellence in sports administration and
community partnership. The Hall of Fame Class of 2025 celebrated a new
generation of Pirate legends, including a Team of Distinction and a Lifetime
Achievement Award honoree, honoring Hampton’s rich athletic heritage.
Expanding career pathways, a new partnership with the Little League World
Series offered four students professional internships, demonstrating the power
of athletics to prepare leaders beyond the game. Together, these milestones
showcase the strength of Hampton’s champions and scholars—and the
enduring standard of excellence that continues to define our Home by the Sea.
Each milestone is a testament to our enduring standard of excellence—on the
field, in the classroom, and in the community—and reflects the leadership and
talent driving our athletic future.
In a new partnership expanding career pathways, four Hampton
University students secured internships with the Little League

Hampton University Football: The Battle of the Real HU
Tradition met triumph in one of the most celebrated rivalries
in Black college football. On September 21, 2024, the
Hampton Pirates defeated Howard University 27–20 in the
100th meeting of the storied series, marking their eighth
consecutive victory in the Battle of the Real HU.
Led by quarterback Chris Zellous ‘25 and running back
Ja’Quan Snipes ‘28, the Pirates delivered a performance
that blended skill, strategy, and heart. A decisive defensive
play sealed the win, electrifying fans and alumni across the
nation.
This historic victory not only fueled university pride,
it spotlighted Hampton Athletics on a national stage,
reaffirming our place among the premier athletic programs
in HBCU and Division I sports.
