GOAL 2: Increase Research and Innovation
Funded Futures Advance Hampton’s
Research Enterprise
At Hampton University, research is more than discovery; it’s destiny. Our mission to
achieve Carnegie Research 1 status is driven by purpose and powered by philanthropy.
Each grant, partnership, and investment brings us closer to transforming lives through
innovation, scholarship, and impact. Together, we are building a research enterprise that
not only answers the world’s most pressing questions but also amplifies Hampton’s role
as a national leader in scientific excellence.
A Defining Moment: Achieving Research 2 Status
The 2024–2025 academic year marked a historic milestone: Hampton University
achieved Research 2 classification by the Carnegie Commission on Higher
Education, placing our institution among an elite group of only 13 HBCUs
nationwide recognized for “high research activity.”
This distinction validates years of strategic investment and faculty achievement.
It strengthens our ability to attract top-tier researchers, secure competitive
grants, and offer transformative opportunities to students. With over $30 million
in research funding secured this fiscal year alone, Hampton has proven that
excellence in research and innovation is both achievable and sustainable.
Our faculty and students are advancing groundbreaking work
in cancer treatment, climate science, cybersecurity, and
artificial intelligence, publishing new findings and engaging
in collaborative projects that elevate Hampton’s visibility on
the global stage. These achievements are the foundation of
our readiness for the next great endeavor and our pursuit of
Research 1 distinction by 2033.
