Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute: Pioneering a New Standard in Cancer Care
The Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute (Hampton Proton), the only proton
therapy center owned by an HBCU, continues to advance health equity through
compassionate care, groundbreaking research, and community partnerships.
Philanthropy funded major upgrades to Pencil Beam Scanning (PBS) technology,
while a $20,000 gift from Microsoft and the Sterling Legacy Foundation supported the
Hampton Proton Internship Program. The PATH (Patient Access to Help) Registry now
connects patients with housing, transportation, and wellness resources, and the annual
Men’s Health Fair provided critical cancer screenings to over 100 men, at no cost.
Through advocacy and action, Hampton Proton is redefining what community-centered
research looks like in the fight against cancer.

For Antonio Suarez Class of 2026, a Department of Sociology student researcher, a
$92,719 Department of Homeland Security grant transformed curiosity into purpose.
Working alongside Dr. Daren Fisher, Antonio contributed to national studies on
election security and domestic terrorism, culminating in a presentation at the American
Criminology Society Conference in Washington, D.C.
